Sniffer dogs, special trap to capture Niali sheep killer

Niali Sheep killingCuttack: With all efforts to trace and capture the mystery animal that has been on a sheep killing spree in Niali area of Cuttack district having failed so far, the Forest department has now pressed sniffer dogs into service and laid a special trap to catch the killer animal variously described as wolf, hyena and Rama Siala by authorities.

More than 200 sheep have fallen prey to the nocturnal raid by the animals, which have also left nearly a dozen humans injured, in the last two months.

The forest department had kept some sheep in the special trap to lure the unknown animals. Besides, it had installed CCTV cameras on the spot to identify the killer. Many forest officials, along with the locals, had kept a close vigil on the trap. But unfortunately, it did not come to the spot last night.

While many people, including Forest Minister Bijayshree Routray, have said that the attacker might be a wolf, others have said it could be a hyena.

After conducting an on the spot investigation, an eight-member team, led by Assistant director of Nandankanan Zoological Park Kamal Lachan Purohit, also claimed that the mystery animal is a wolf.

The suspense over the death of the domestic animals, which is still continuing  has left people in the area clueless and panicky.
