Opthalmologist arrested for accepting bribe Rs 5,500 in Subarnapur

Subarnapur: The Odisha vigilance on Monday arrested a doctor working at District head quarters hospital of Subarnapur for demanding and accepting bribe Rs 5,500.

The doctor, identified as Sanjib Kumar Kar, works at District head quarters hospital, Subarnapur as Opthalmologist.

Acting on a tip-off, the vigilance team conducted a raid and caught Dr Kar red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,500 to carry out a cataract surgery.

According to officials, Kar had demanded Rs 5,500 from the complainant for conducting eye surgery of his uncle. The said surgery is done free of cost in government hospitals across the State. In spite of this, Dr. Kar was demanding bribe from patients for doing the surgery. The complainant, being a poor man, requested Dr.Kar several times to do the cataract surgery of his uncle, who is an ailing old man and an octogenarian, but he insisted on the bribe amount to be paid before the surgery.

Finding no other way, the complainant informed to the Vigilance Authority about the matter.

The entire bribe money has been recovered from accused Dr. Kar and seized.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches are going on at 3 locations of Dr.Kar in Bolangir and Subarnapur districts.

In this connection, Sambalpur Vigilance PS Case No 30 dt. 26.11.2023 u/s 7 P.C. Amendment Act, 2018 has been registered. The investigation is in progress against accused Dr. Sanjib Ku. Kar.
