Noted Odia music director Basudev Rath passes away at 68

Cuttack: Veteran music director of Odia movie industry Basudev Rath passed away at a hospital in Cuttack following an illness yesterday. He was 68.

Rath was suffering from protracted illness for past one month and had been admitted to the SCB Medical Hospital in Cuttack around 18 days ago. However, he didn’t showed any improvement and breathed his last at the ICU of the hospital yesterday.

An extremely popular musician of his era, Rath had composed a number of popular songs most of which were meant for frontline actors of the Ollywood industry. After starting his career with superhit Odia movie Sakhi Gopinath (1977), he struck the chord of Odia movie goers and carved out a special place for him in their hearts with the popular number ‘Jhumka Tike Tu Ta Halei De’ from from ‘Chinha Achinha film’. His other songs like ‘Maa Tume Jagatara Saha Bharasa’, ‘Sagare Kule Dine Dekhili Jhia Tiye’, ‘Lagichi Dori Jibi Mu Puri’ also turned out to be massive hits.

In his long career the late musician had scored music for more than 150 films and around 50 music albums.

Personalities from Odia movie fraternity and music industry have expressed their deep condolence on the demise of Rath and have dubbed it to be an irreparable loss to Odisha.
