Puri: The mortal remains of martyred Odia Army jawan, Debashish Biswal reached his native village at Satybadi in Puri.

The jawan breathed his last while on duty on April 20. Around five army Rashtriya Rifles were killed in Poonch district after terrorists ambushed their truck around 3 pm on Thursday with grenades and gunshots that ignited the vehicle and turned into ashes.

“An Army vehicle moving between Bhimber Gali and Poonch in the Rajouri sector in J-K was fired upon by unidentified terrorists today. The vehicle caught fire, due to the likely use of grenades by terrorists,” the army said in its statement.

He is survived by his wife and family members.

Earlier today, a guard of honour was given soon after the mortal remains reached the airport, Governor Ganeshi Lal, a host of dignitaries and senior Army officials paid tributes to the jawan.

The martyr’s wife also paid tributes to the mortal remains at the airport and thereafter he was taken to his native village in Satyabadi area of Puri district. The body was taken in a procession and last rites will be performed at his village Khandayat Sahi crematorium.

On Friday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakh for the family members of Odia jawan, Debashish Biswal, who was killed in a terror attack.

The ex-gratia compensation will be paid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

Extending his heartfelt condolences to the family of Biswal, Patnaik praised the bravery and courage of the soldier. Paying his deepest condolences, Patnaik prayed the God to give strength and patience to the bereaved family members to overcome the grief.
