Malkangiri: In a significant development, the Malkangiri airport is all set to start operating. Preparations for the inauguration of the airport are underway. A trial flight on the runway is scheduled for today.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik is likely to inaugurate the airport in a ceremony that has been scheduled for two days from now. However, no official confirmation regarding the same has been given.

Under the RCS Udan scheme, the Malkangiri airport will be integrated into the national aviation network soon. Initially, a flight with capacity of 20-30 passengers will operate on the 1600 metre runway. Future plans include operating larger aircrafts on the runway.

The infrastructure of the airport has also witnessed some significant developments like a terminal building and a fire station. Notably, the first phase of operations need not require a license from the DGCA as only non-scheduled flights will be operating.

Initially, the flights will be connecting Bhubaneswar and Malkangiri.
