La Nina Effect: Severe, Harsh Winter To Be Experienced

Bhubaneswar: The evolving winter condition, climate change during this year is wielding the threat of harsher and severe winter.

Experts say that a La Nina system has formed and it will bring in this extreme weather formula.

It is noteworthy that, the La Nina system has formed for the second year in a row, according to the Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a recent statement said.

The latest La Nina is expected to last through the early spring of 2022 (February), the NOAA statement said. Previous La Ninas occurred during the winter of 2020-2021.

La Nina is threatening to send the temperature all over India hence plunging to as low as 3 degrees Celsius.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), La Nina typically spells below-normal temperatures in the northern hemisphere and has prompted regional weather agencies to issue warnings about a frigid winter.

Climate change is also playing its role as India received 41 per cent more rainfall than normal from October 1-21 with Uttarakhand alone recording more than five times its normal precipitation.

During La Nina, the trade winds are stronger than usual, pushing more warm water toward Asia. This leads to increasing in upwelling off the west coast of the Americas, which brings cold water to the surface.

Episodes of La Nina typically last nine to 12 months, but can sometimes last for years. Such events occur every two to seven years, on average, but they don’t occur on a regular schedule.
