Annual bird census in Chilika Lake concludes, bird population slightly increased

The annual bird counting in Chilika has concludeda today and the bird population in Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon has increased this year by over 5000 as compared to last year.

Bhubaneswar: The annual bird counting in Chilika has concludeda today and the bird population in Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon has increased this year by over 5000 as compared to last year.

According to Amlan Nayak, DFO, Chilika Wildlife Division, 11,37,759 birds of 187 species have arrived in Chilika this year which is slightly more than last year (11,31,929).

Last year, a total of 11,31,929 birds of 184 species came, including 10,93,49 foreign birds of 105 species and 38,880 local birds of 79 species.

Similarly, a total of 11,37,759 birds of 187 species have arrived this year, including 10,98,813 foreign birds of 108 species and 38,09,46 local birds of 79 species.

According to the information, bird counting was going on from 6 am to 12 pm today. Chilika was divided into 5 zones and 21 teams were deployed for the bird count. And each team had 6-7 members. While 8 teams were deployed in Tangi zone, 6 teams in Balugaon, 4 teams in Satpada, 2 teams in Rambha and 1 team in Chilika.

However, while GPS, binoculars, walkie-talkies, cameras and other equipment were used in the enumeration, bird lovers, bird protection camp workers, OUT students, ornithologists, social workers, wildlife department staff and BNHS were involved.
