Phulbani: Two girl students died and 23 others were confirmed as having contracted the dreaded hepatitis A virus in the hostels of Lingagarh Girls High School in Kandhamal district of Odisha on Thursday.
The deceased students are identified as Kanchan Digal and Amisha Pradhan . They were admitted to the G. Udaygiri Hospital in a critical condition. The affected students have left the hostel and moved to their homes for treatment.
Talking to Kalinga TV, a guardian of one of the jaundice affected students on condition of anonymity, “Drinking water facilities are very poor in this residential school run by the SC & ST department of the State Government . The students are taking contaminated water and they often suffer from stomach infections.”
Meanwhile, SC & ST Affairs Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi today rushed to the school to take stock of the incident.
Jaundice most often occurs as a result of an underlying disorder that either causes overproduction of bilirubin or prevents the liver from disposing it of. Contaminated water is considered the main source of infection. .
