Telecom Minister warn against receiving calls from unknown numbers

The Central Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has urged mobile users across the country, against picking up calls from “unknown numbers”. He specifically said that people should never pick up calls made from unknown numbers.

In an interaction with the media recently he said “I request every citizen that they should respond to calls from only (telephone/mobile) those numbers they recognize.”

The Minister’s request comes in response to concerns relating to remarkable increase in the number of spam calls and cyber fraud.

Minister Vaishnaw repeatedly stressed for caution when dealing with unknown calls. One should respond to unknown numbers only if an identification message is sent the Minister further added.

With this simple precautionary measure the safety and security of mobile users can be ensured, they can be protected against spam calls and cyber fraud.

It is worth mentioning that India has seen a remarkable rise in spam calls on instant messaging platforms like WhatsApp. The calls are both from national and international numbers, they also include unwelcome video calls.

According to reports, the Ministry recently launched the ‘Sanchar Saathi’ portal, a dedicated platform to prevent fraud, spam and unwelcome calls. Individuals can report and block spam calls with the help of this website for a remarkably safer telecom user experience.

The Minister informed in the presser that over 40 lakh SIM cards and 41,000 unauthorised “points of sale” have been sealed and blacklisted relating to this issue. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has helped significantly to reduce these cases of spamming and cyber fraud, he added.
