Tamil Nadu transport workers declare indefinite strike

Tamil Nadu transport workers unions have announced an indefinite bus strike alleging that government has not considered any of their demands

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu transport workers unions have announced an indefinite bus strike from today, alleging that the state government has not considered any of their demands.

The union have demanded the signing of the 15th wage revision agreement, revising dearness allowance for pensioners, and filling vacancies in bus driver and conductor posts.

CITU leader A Soundararajan stated that the transport workers demands are unjust and unfair.

The strike comes ahead of major South-Indian festival “Pongal” which is likely to disrupt the public during the festive rush.

About 80 percent of buses in Tamil Nadu were being operated amid the strike call given by various transport unions, officials said.

The state government buses were operated in several parts including Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Kanyakumari districts, not affecting the commuters, they said.

Transport Minister S S Sivasankar alleged that the strike by the Transport Union had “political motives”. He warned of appropriate action and stated that the demands would be met when the financial situation improves.
