President Droupadi Murmu gives assent to Criminal Law bills
President Droupadi Murmu has granted her approval to three criminal law bills after it was passed by both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha .
New Delhi: President of Indian, Droupadi Murmu on Monday has granted her approval to three criminal law bills. These bills include the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, aiming to substitute the Indian Penal Code, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (Second) Sanhita. These bill were replace the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act.
The Lok Sabha passed the bills on December 20th, while Ranjya Sabha gave clearance to the bills on December 21st.
“These three bills which create history have been passed unanimously. They have unshackled the colonial legacy of our criminal jurisprudence that was hurtful to citizens of the country and favoured alien rulers,” said Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankar.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah discussed about the three new criminal law bills in Lok Sabha following which Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that these laws are a bid to extinguish colonial laws from justice system.
“The purpose of the Indian Penal Code, which was made in 1860, was to punish, not to give justice. Following the recognition of this House, the ‘Indian Judicial Code, ‘Indian Civil Defense Code’ in place of CrPC 1998 and the Indian Evidence Bill in place of the Indian Evidence Act 1872 will be implemented in India,” said Amit Shah.
