Mumbai Airport Bomb Threat: Suspect Detained in Kerala; Probe underway

A person from Kerala, was apprehended by the Maharashtra ATS for sending a bomb threat to Mumbai International Airport Limited.

Thiruvannathapuram: In a recent alarming incident, a person from Thiruvananthapuram of Kerala, was apprehended by the Maharashtra ATS for sending a threatening email to Mumbai International Airport Limited.

The email, received on Thursday, conveyed a bomb threat to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. The sender demanded USD 1 million (Rs 8.33 crore) in Bitcoin to prevent the purported attack.

The Sahar Police in Mumbai promptly registered a case under sections 385 and 505(1)(b) of the IPC. The Maharashtra ATS, which made the arrest, stated that the Sahar Police would oversee the investigation. A team from Sahar Police is en route to Thiruvananthapuram to take custody of the suspect.

The threatening email outlined an ultimatum, stating, “We will blast Terminal 2 within 48 hours unless one million dollars in Bitcoin is transferred to the specified address (1GixaieWJoJuAqcEJc4hCNDi5gCcpGHJ2W). Another alert will be sent after 24 hours.”

The email originated from quaidacasrol@gmail.com but was sent using the feedback.bom@aani.com ID. Authorities traced the threat email to the IP address ‘209.85.161.50,’ suggesting an overseas location.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is managed by Adani Airport Holding Limited (AAHL). The case has been filed against an unidentified individual under sections 385 (putting a person in fear of injury to commit extortion) and 505(1)(b) (statements made with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public or against public tranquility) of the Indian Penal Code at the Sahar police station. Further investigation is underway.
