Mother son trapped when lift of high rise falls from 8th floor to basement in Ghaziabad

A mother and son narrowly escaped serious harm when the elevator they were in suddenly fell from the 8th floor to the basement in Ghaziabad.

Delhi: In a harrowing incident, a 36-year-old woman and her three-year-old son narrowly escaped serious harm when the elevator they were in suddenly fell from the 8th floor to the basement of Prateek Grand Society in Siddharth Vihar in Ghaziabad last Saturday.

The woman, Gurpreet Kaur, holding her young son Nirmit, desperately tried opening the elevator door after it came to a jolting stop. Unfortunately, her efforts were in vain, as the alarm system didn’t respond.

Then, a surprising turn of events unfolded as the elevator automatically ascended two stories to the ground floor, and then the doors opened, allowing Gurpreet and Nirmit to exit.

The frightening incident occurred around 10 p.m. when Gurpreet and her son got on the elevator from the ground floor to the 16th. Two other residents joined them but left on the eighth floor, after which the elevator malfunctioned.

The situation became even scarier when Gurpreet and Nirmit realised that their cries for help in the basement went unanswered. It took about 15 minutes of fear and uncertainty before the elevator spontaneously moved upward, finally stopping on the ground floor, allowing them to escape.

Prateek Grand is a massive complex with 2,400 flats and 29 floors in each of its 24 towers, housing around 2,000 families.

In a related incident back in August, a 73-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a Noida high-rise elevator accident caused by snapped wires, possibly due to a cardiac arrest.
