India Records Highest Covid Spike In A Day With 28.9k Cases

New Delhi: India on Wednesday witnessed 28,903 fresh cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, adding to the cumulative tally which now stands as 11,438,734, the Union health ministry said.

This is considered to be the highest daily spike seen in the country so far this year.

The number of death cases has increased to 1,59,044 with 188 new fatalities, the highest in around two months with Maharashtra reporting 87 casualties and Punjab reporting 38 causalities, the data updated at 8 am stated

The surge in new infections has pushed India’s tally behind the US and Brazil.

Registering in the increase for the seventh day in a row, the total active caseload has increased to 2,34,406 which now comprises 2.05 percent of the total infections, while the recovery rate has further dropped to 96.56 percent, the data.

In excess of 60 percent, daily infections have been recorded in Maharashtra.

More than 1.14 crore people have been found infected so far in the country. According to the health ministry data, Maharashtra, Punjab, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu, where daily Covid-19 cases continue to rise, account for more than 78 percent of the new infections.

Maharashtra is followed by Kerala with 1,970 cases; Karnataka with 1,135; Punjab 1,463; Gujarat 954; Chhattisgarh 856; and Tamil Nadu with 867 cases.

Since March 11, India has been recording over 20,000 daily increases in cases.
