Bengaluru man sues restaurant for serving chicken biryani without chicken, wins Rs 1000

A Bengaluru man sued a local restaurant and took it to court after the eatery served him ‘chicken biryani without any chicken.’

Bengaluru: In a recent incident, a Bengaluru man sued a local restaurant and took it to court after a peculiar dining experience. The man, Krishnappa, filed a lawsuit claiming that the eatery served him ‘chicken biryani without any chicken.’

The incident dates back to April when Krishnappa visited the restaurant with his wife after facing a cooking gas shortage. After ordering chicken biryani and taking it home, they discovered that the rice had no meat in it.

Krishnappa contacted the restaurant, seeking a resolution. Despite assurances of a replacement, it never arrived, and calls went unanswered thereafter. Frustrated with the incident, Krishnappa served a notice and legal documents but again received no response. The Bengaluru man decided to sue the restaurant. In May, he approached the Bengaluru Urban District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, seeking Rs 30,000 in compensation for the ordeal.

Representing himself, Krishnappa presented pictures of the meatless biryani, highlighting the mental distress caused. Acknowledging his argument, the judges ruled in his favor.  They stated that knowingly or unknowingly, the restaurant made a mistake by failing to provide the expected service. As a result, the court directed the restaurant to compensate Krishnappa with Rs 1,000 for mental distress and issue Rs 150 for the food.
