Lok Sabha Election 2024: Know how to vote if you don’t have a voter ID card

The entire country is preparing for the upcoming Lok Sabha Election 2024 while some state also are gearing up for their assembly elections. As per the schedule, the election s would be held in seven phases between April 19 and June 1 (April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1) and the counting of votes will be done on June 4, 2024.

Not only the politicians, candidates and their parties, but also the general public or the voters are preparing themselves for the elections. As per the rules, one need to have his/her voter identity card (also known as the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) to cast vote. But, there are several people who might not be having it or might have misplaced it.

If you are one of them and is now worried either you can exercise your right to vote, then be relaxed you can still vote for your favourite leader. As per the rules of the Election Commission, one can still vote even if he/she does not has a physical copy of their voter ID card. All what is needed is the voter’s name is enlisted in the Election Commission’s voter list.

Here’s how to add your name in the Election Commission’s voter list and cast vote even without a voter ID card:

Know the eligibility criteria to for getting registered in electoral roll:

  • Applicant should be i. An Indian citizen, ii. of 18 years or more of age with reference to qualifying dates, iii. ordinary resident of the area concerned

Documents needed for registering in electoral roll:

  • Passport-size colour photograph.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Address proof (Aadhaar, bank passbook, APL/BPL cards).

Know how to register in electoral roll:

  • One can visit the official website https://voters.eci.gov.in and fill up Form 6 if a general voter while the overseas voter has to fill out Form 6A and furnish details like name, date of birth, and address, and upload supporting documents.

How to check enrollment status:

  • One can check his/her enrollment status in two different ways – online and offline. For online, visit the Electoral Search website to see if you are registered to vote. If your name appears on the list, you are eligible to vote; otherwise, you need to register to vote. In case of offline, you can collect Form 6 free of charge from the offices of Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers, and Booth Level Officers 3. After filing the form, you have to submit it along with relevant documents to the concerned Electoral Registration Officer or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer in person or send him through post office or hand it over to the Booth Level Officer of your polling area.

Know how to vote without a voter ID card:

  • According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), one can exercise his/her votes without possessing a voter ID card. For this, one has to enlist himself or herself in the voter list by filling up Form 6 and submit it to the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of his/her assembly constituency. Once enlisted, one can vote without a voter ID card.

After enlisting in the voter’s list, you may have to produce one of the following alternate ID proofs or documents to vote without a voter ID card:

  • PAN card
  • Aadhaar Card
  • Driving Licence
  • Passport
  • Passbook issued by a bank or post office
  • Pension document for retired personnel
