BMW’s flagship electric car iX xDrive50 gets a range of 520 km, still falls short of claimed mileage

The flagship electric car of BMW- iX xDrive50 gets an official range of 520 km. The BMW iX series is available in two models- xDrive40 and xDrive50. While both of the cars are available globally, in India only the BMW iX xDrive40 is available. The range of the cars is calculated by Environmental Protection Agency or the EPA, which is a US body for rating energy efficiency of electric cars.

While the BMW iX xDrive 50 gets mileage of 520 km or 324 miles. On the other hand, the BMW iX xDrive 40 gets a mileage of 425 kms on a single charge. Speaking about the xDrive 50, the mileage of 520km can be expected if driven on 20-inch wheels. On the other hand, wheel sizes of 21-inch or 22-inch will give a range between 491 km to 507 km. However, the certified mileage by BMW (i.e 611 km) is not near to the EPA mileage.

The BMW iX is powered by two electric motors that are present in the front and rear axles. A 111.5 kWh battery pack powers the dual motor all-wheel drive system. The acceleration of the electric SUV is less than 6 seconds for 0-100 kmph. The top speed which can be achieved by the SUV is 200 kmph. In terms of power, the BMW iX xDrive 40 produces a maximum power of 326 hp and peak torque of 630 Nm. On the other hand, the BMW iX xDrive 50 produces a power of 523 hp and 765 Nm of torque.

In terms of charging, the BMW iX can be charged up to 80 percent by using a 150 kW DC fast charger within just 30 minutes. However, a 50 kW DC charger takes more than an hour to charge the car. The standard 11 kW AC charger can take up to seven hours to fully charge the SUV.

In India the BMW iX xDrive 40 is priced at Rs 1.16 crore (ex-showroom) in India. The SUV is a completely-built-up-unit (CBU). CBU automobile is imported from a different country and is sold in a different country.
