The Maruti Suzuki Swift has turned 40. Let us take a look at the journey of Suzuki Swift so far.

Originally known as the Cultus/SA310 from Japan, the Swift got its name in Euripe in the year 1985. Its debut was marked in the year 1983, at the 25th Tokyo Motor Show. With this started a journey that has spanned over continents, decades, and generations.

The Swift started its journey in the United Kingdom back in the year 1989. Its journey lasted for a period of 13 years. The Swift for the UK market was produced in Hungary. Therein, the dimensions were kept almost the same as the 1983 predecessor. However, minor modifications in cabin space and luggage capacity were made. The design also featured a four-wheel independent suspension. The model came in three and five door configurations with 1.0-liter and 1.3-liter engine options.

The Maruti Suzuki Swift made its debut in the Indian market in the year 2005. Since then, we have seen three generations of the hatchback model being launched in the market. The base model of 1.3-liter engine was replaced by a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre engine in the year 2007. Over the period of time, it was seen that the Indian audience had a greater preference for Indian consumers.

It is noteworthy mentioning that the Swift achieved over a million sales in India in the year 2013. Interestingly, by the year 2021, it went up to about 2.5 million sales. This further solidified the position of the brand as a beloved compact hatchback in the country. Notably, even after almost two decades in India, the Maruti Suzuki Swift continues to remain a favourite among the Indian consumers and is one of the most popular cars in the market.
