Being IITian you should aspire to achieve the best for world at large: President Kovind

Bhubaneswar: President Ram Nath Kovind while delivering his speech during the 6th convocation ceremony of IIT, Bhubaneswar at the institute’s Arugul campus today, advised the graduating students to aspire to achieve the best not only for themselves and their families, but also for society, for the nation and world at large.

“It is a great pleasure for me to be delivering the 6th Convocation address of the IIT, Bhubaneswar. We all must strive to give back to our society in our own little way. You as the IITian are fortunate to have received world class education, there is a moral obligation to pay back and to help those who are less privileged. I am sure that you will not hesitate in taking up worthy challenges in your careers,” advised Kovind.

The President also congratulated the parents of the outstanding students saying, “While it is you who receive the medals, it is your parents who feel the most pride. I congratulate all parents and family members on what is indeed a special moment for them.”

Ram Nath Kovind recalled the mythological and historic importance of the the institute’s campus. “This location is not an ordinary place. It is believed that Lord Rama visited this area and the Pandavas stayed here during their exile. It is here that 200 years ago Buxi Jagabandhu, led the Paika Bidroha. You are indeed fortunate to have your campus in such a historic area.

He also congratulated the outgoing students for taking their pledged in Sanskrit. “I have visited as many as 146 institutes since I became the President of India. Normally, in most of the institutions the graduating students take their pledge either in English or in the local language. However, here in IIT Bhubaneswar, for the first time I saw that the outgoing students took their pledge in Sanskrit.”

“IIT Bhubaneswar’s BTech intake has doubled in recent times, which is a big achievement for a third generation IIT. However, the institute should develop a strong network within its alumni and the former students should keep good contact with their alma mater for nourishing it further,” the President added.

He also said that the setting up of two new institutes (ICT-IOC) will offer a 5-year Integrated MTech and Executive MTech programmes. This campus will prove to be a centre of excellence for skill development and research. SDI Bhubaneswar will be the country’s first institute in hydrocarbon sector.

He complimented Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for extending cooperation for setting up these institutes in Bhubaneswar.

Odisha Governor Dr. S.C Jamir, Union Petroleum Minister, Sanjiv Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Chairman, BOG IIT Bhubaneswar Pankaj Ramanbhai Patel, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar Prof R. V. Raja Kumar and others attended the convocation ceremony.

Soon after attending 6th Convocation ceremony of IIT, Bhubaneswar, Kovind embarked on his return journey from here in a special flight.

During his two-day maiden visit to Odisha along with India’s first lady Savita Kovind, the President inaugurated Anand Bhawan Museum and Learning Centre in Cuttack. He visited the Pilgrim Town Puri where he offered prayer to Lord Jagannath at Srimandir and addressed at the centenary celebration of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan in Puri.
