Volcano erupts in Iceland, residents evacuated immediately

A volcano erupted in south-west Iceland near the fishing town of Grindavik of Iceland on Sunday, which has been evacuated.

Iceland: A volcano erupted in south-west Iceland near the fishing town of Grindavik of Iceland on Sunday, which has been evacuated.

It began erupting about 03.00 GMT (8:30 am IST), but it is not clear which direction the lava is flowing.

It is second eruption in the region in less than a month. On December 18, 2023 a volcano eruption started in Svartsengi volcanic system.

Iceland has more than 30 active volcano systems.

At the same time, Marapi volcano erupted in Indonesia on Sunday, with ash rising 1,300 metres (4,300 feet) from the peak six weeks month after a fatal eruption.

On December 2023, over 20 people were killed after Marapi, one of Sumatra’s most active volcanoes, erupted and spewed grey clouds of ash as high as 3 km.
