Pakistan arrests 16 Indian fishermen for allegedly violating maritime territory

Islamabad: Pakistan has arrested 16 Indian fishermen on Tuesday for alleged violation of the country’s maritime boundary.

The Maritime Security Agency (MSA) said three boats were also seized during the operation. The arrested fishermen were handed over to police for legal proceedings.

Pakistan and India frequently arrest fishermen as there is no clear demarcation of the maritime border in the Arabian Sea. Moreover, most of the fishermen do not have boats with the technology to know their precise location.

As a victim of lengthy and slow bureaucratic and legal procedures, the fishermen usually remain in jail for several months.

On August 13th, Pakistan had released 26 Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture.
