Konark police takes Abhijit Iyer Mitra on 4-Day Remand

Bhubaneswar: The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court here on Wednesday granted permission Konark to take controversial academician Abhijit Iyer Mitra on four-day remand for interrogation in connection with his derogatory remarks on Sun Temple of Konark and undermining the dignity of the rich culture of Odisha.

Last evening, Abhijit was lodged in Jharpada Jail here after the court rejected his bail plea and sent him to 14-day judicial custody.

Earlier on yesterday, Abijit had appeared before the House Committee of the Odisha Assembly and tendered an unconditional apology for his derogatory remarks against the Sun Temple and comments on legislators.

The House panel headed by leader of opposition Narasingh Mishra asked Abhijit to re-appear on November 2 and submit an affidavit.

On October 4, the Supreme Court refused to grant bail to the Delhi based journalist saying “If your life is in danger, then what better place to stay than the jail, you will be secure.”

Abhijit was arrested in the national capital on September 20 but was granted bail by a Delhi court. He was asked to furnish a surety of Rs 1 lakh and told to join the probe in Bhub-aneswar by September 28

On September 16, Abhijit had posted a video on Twitter making derogatory remarks on the Sun Temple in Konark while being present at the spot.
