Jakarta: A powerful earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, shook Indonesia’s Maluku province on Wednesday. The earthquake did not result in a tsunami, according to the country’s meteorology agency, BMKG.

The earthquake, which originated at a shallow seabed location, struck at 11.52 a.m., as reported by the Xinhua news agency, quoting BMKG.

The epicenter of the earthquake was situated 251 kilometers northwest of Maluku Tenggara Barat (Tanimbar Islands) district, with a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the sea floor.

The earthquake’s intensity was most strongly felt in Saumlaki town and the Banda Sea, registering at IV to V on the MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) scale. In other parts of the province, the effects were comparatively weaker, as stated by the BMKG.

The BMKG did not issue a tsunami warning since the earthquake did not possess the potential to generate massive waves.

As of now, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or damages caused by the earthquake.
