Another earthquake of 3.6 magnitude strikes Nepal

After a powerful magnitude 6.4 earthquake Saturday, Nepal was hit by another seismic event - another 3.6 magnitude on Sunday.

Kathmandu: Just a day after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 rocked Nepal, the Himalayan nation has been hit by another seismic event, registering a magnitude of 3.6. The second earthquake occurred in the early hours of Sunday, adding to the challenges already faced by Nepal in the wake of the initial disaster.

The earthquake struck at 04:38:20 IST at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located 169 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu, according to information provided by the National Centre for Seismology.

“Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.6, Occurred on 05-11-2023, 04:38:20 IST, Lat: 28.63 & Long: 83.94, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 169 km NW of Kathmandu, Nepal,” the NCS reported.

This second quake comes on the heels of the major earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 that struck Nepal on Saturday. The initial quake had already caused significant destruction and claimed over 157 lives.

The region experienced subsequent aftershocks, including one measuring 3.3 on the Richter Scale, on Saturday afternoon, intensifying the difficulties faced by the affected population.

Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, personally assessed the situation and visited the impacted areas to witness the extensive damage firsthand. In response, the government has mobilized the Nepal Army, Nepali Sentinel, and the Armed Police Force to carry out rescue operations via helicopters.

Healthcare workers are being rapidly deployed to provide medical aid to the injured, with essential medical supplies sourced from surrounding districts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extensive damage caused by the earthquake in Nepal. He offered support and assistance, reaffirming India’s willingness to provide all possible aid.

The impact of these seismic events has not been confined to Nepal alone, as tremors were felt in several districts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar, underscoring the far-reaching effects of these natural disasters.
