2 killed, 3 missing after Cargo ship collides with bridge in China’s Guandong province

Beijing: In a tragic incident that unfolded in China on Thursday morning, two people lost their lives while three others have gone missing. A cargo ship collided with a bridge in China which led to the collapse of a portion of the structure, said reports in this regard.

The incident took place during the early morning hours of Thursday in the Guangzhou area of China’s Guandong province.

Reportedly, a container ship collided against the pier of the Lixinsha Bridge. Due to which, a total of five vehicles were plummeted into the Pearl River. The five vehicles also included a public bus. Preliminary reports suggest that other vehicles on the cargo fell onto the vessel.

Footages that have been recovered from the nearby CCTV show the occurrence of the tragic incident. The images show a broken section of the bridge with the ship beneath it. Exact details of the incident are yet to be ascertained.

Rescue operations are currently underway for the mission people. It is noteworthy mentioning that the bridge was long due for upgrades. The plans to improve it had been postponed on three different occasions.

Further, the captain of the cargo ship has been arrested by the local police. As per reports, the cargo ship was on its way to Nansha from Nanhai district in Foshan when it collided with the bridge in China, causing the accident.
