This software update from Apple will make iPhone 13 repairs much cheaper

Apple had launched the iPhone 13 series in September 2021 and it became an instant hit among premium smartphone lovers. The recently launched iPhone 13 series does not offer any screen unlock feature just like its predecessor. Users have to solely rely on the face ID of the device in order to unlock it. But replacing a screen manufactured by a third party disabled the Face ID on the iPhone 13. However, Apple has revealed that its next software update will help users to replace the screen on iPhone 13 without affecting the Face ID.

Apple in an interview with the Verge, has told that its new software update will allow users to continue using Face ID along with third-party screen replacement. This roughly means that you will have to pay less for iPhone 13 repairs and make no compromises with the security. At present, if an iPhone 13 user opts to go for a screen replacement, he/ she has to visit Apple’s authorised repair centre and get a replacement screen. If they opt to replace a screen in a local repair shop it will make the Face ID non-functional.

Apple has however not specified when it will roll out this software update.

Why the Face ID becomes non-functional with third-party display

Along with the iPhone 13 screen a tiny control chip for Face ID is also present. When an original screen is replaced, the control chip is removed along with it, which breaks the Face ID. However, if the repair person moves the control chip from the old screen to the new screen the Face ID will not break. It is important to mention that moving a control chip between two screens is a complicated process and is very difficult for local repair persons. After the new software update, the requirement for a control chip swapping is unnecessary. This simply means, the screen replacement will not only be less worry some, but also cost effective.

In India, the prices of Apple iPhone 13 series starts at Rs 69,900 and goes up to Rs 1,79,900. Interested buyers can either go for a one-time payment or opt for EMI options.
