Angul: A 25-year-old youth died under suspicious circumstances during counselling at the Kaniha police station on Friday. While the police claimed that it was a natural death the family members of the deceased alleged police atrocity leading to his death.
The deceased identified as Deepak Barik of Baragunduri village was being counselled in the presence of all family members including his wife at the police station.
Barik, however, fell on the ground at the police station and was immediately rushed to Kaniha hospital where he succumbed.
Police said that Barik has been summoned by the police after his wife has lodged a complaint of domestic violence. He was being counselled by an SI of the police station when he collapsed.
“He never complained of any illness in recent past and was quite normal before going to the police station. We strongly suspect that he was beaten by the police leading to his death. We demand stringent action against the police officers responsible for his death,” said a family member of the deceased.
On the other hand, police said that they are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death.
