Woman Injured In Police Assault In Jagannath Temple

Puri: A woman devotee sustained injuries after she was allegedly assaulted by a policeman inside the Jagannath temple during Nabajoubana darshan this evening. However, no formal police complaint has been lodged by the victim in this connection.

The victim, a resident of Jajpur district alleged that she was assaulted by a cop near Bhitarakatha of the 12th Century shrine at around 5 pm. “The sanctum sanctorum was crowded at that time and the man in uniform attacked me while I was trying to get a glimpse of Lord Jagannath,’ said the woman.

The woman was immediately rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital from where she was discharged after preliminary treatment.

Lakhs of devotees thronged the temple today to seek blessings of the Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra for ‘Nabajoubana Darshan’. The world famous Rath Yatra of the deities will be held on Thursday.
