Woman burnt alive by in-laws for dowry in Kendrapara, 3 held

Kendrapara: In yet another dowry killing in the state, a woman was burnt alive by her in-laws in Balisuan village under Marshaghai Police Station area last night.

The deceased has been identified as Bharati Swain of Badapala village.

At least three rooms were also gutted during the incident as the fire spread very rapidly to the house.

As per the dying declaration of the victim, her mother-in-law along with two sisters-in-law tied her hands and legs before dousing with kerosene and setting on fire last night for not bringing more dowry from home. The incident took place while Bharati’s husband and father-in-law were out of home in some work.

She was immediately rushed to Marshaghai Community Health Centre (CHC) in critical condition and was later rushed to SCB Medical in Cuttack by some neighbours. She died under treatment this morning.

Later, the victim’s family lodged a complaint with Marshaghai Police in connection with the case. In the complaint they claimed that, since marrying Nirmal Swain, son of Nisamani Swain of Balisuan village few years back she was being tortured by her in-laws for dowry.

Police have detained the accused mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law of the victim and started investigation into the incident.
