Woman killed over dowry in Cuttack village

Cuttack: Crime against women continues unabated in the state with another woman reportedly killed over dowry in Nischintakoili village under Salipur Tehsil in the district last night.

The deceased had been identified as Madhusmita Khuntia, daughter of one Daitari Khuntia of Derabish area in Kendrapara district.

Madhusmita who was married off to one Niranjan Sahoo of Nischintakoili village in April 2013 and is survived by two sons, was rushed to the Nischintakoili CHC in a critical condition last night, by her in-laws. However, she died under treatment after a few hours.

Tension gripped the CHC premises after the deceased’s father Daitari reached there and claimed that her daughter had been murdered for dowry. He lodged a complaint against the in-laws of his daughter at the Nischintakoili Police Station in this connection also.

“Madhusmita’s in-laws have been given dowry at the time of marriage. However, they demanded Rs 1 lakh again after a few days and started torturing my daughter physically and mentally. I suspect she had been killed,” said Daitari.

On the other hand the in-laws of the deceased have rubbished the allegation and claimed that the death occurred to sickness.

Police have rushed the body for postmortem and are investigating into the case.
