Water level rises in Hirakud dam after heavy rain

Sambalpur: The Hirakud reservoir here has registered a rise in water level due to heavy rain in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi river over past couple of days triggered by a depression in Bay of Bengal.

As per the dam authorities, the water level rose to 607.97 feet against the optimum level of 630 feet till 10 am this morning.

Every second 1.90 lakh cusec of water is entering into the dam against a release of 6000 cusec water during the same time span.

If the present condition continues and water level further increases in the dam then more water would be released, informed dam authorities.

Notably, the upper catchment areas of Mahanadi has received 86.37 mm rainfall yesterday whereas the number remained at 65.75 mm in lower catchment areas during the same period.
