‘Rangabati’ music composer Prabhudatta Pradhan breathes his last

Sambalpur: Prabhudatta Pradhan, the music composer of the evergreen Sambalpuri number ‘Rangabati’ passed away at his residence here in the wee hours today following a prolonged illness. He was 75.

Born on November 11, 1943 Prabhudatta went on to try his hands on music at the age of 3 and later learnt Tabla from Banaras in Uttar Pradesh. He joined the All India Radio (AIR), Sambalpur as an instrumentalist in 1969.

In 1975 Prabhudatta composed music for the ‘Rangabati’ duet penned by Mitrabhanu Gountia and voiced by Padma Shri Jitendra Haripal and Krishna Patel. The song struck a chord among music lovers and continues its success journey till today. The song got official recognition after being played in the tableau of Odisha which took part in the Republic Day celebration-2007 at New Delhi.

A remix of the ‘Rangabati’ song stirred a controversy in 2015 and cases were lodged against famed singers like Sona Mohapatra and Rituraj Mohanty over copy right violation.

However, the hit ‘Rangabati’ number had been recreated in several other Indian languages as well as some foreign languages signifying its popularity in the past.
