Sambalpur: In a shocking incident, an elderly couple reportedly consumed poison, which led to the death of the woman, after they were unable to bear the torture meted out to them by their own son and daughter-in-law. The incident has taken place at Jharmunda village of Odisha’s Sambalpur district.
According to reports, Tokadhar Mahakud (68) and his wife Brundabati Mahakud (62) had a fight with their son and daughter-in-law on Tuesday, following which they got out of the house with a bicycle. However, as they did not return home, their family members searched for them at all possible locations, but in vain.
Some people spotted the elderly couple lying on a field at Goshala village this morning. They had allegedly consumed poison due to which Tokadhar had already died on the spot while Brundabati’s condition was very critical.
A team of local police rushed to the spot after getting information and started an investigation into the matter. They sent Tokadhar’s body to the hospital for autopsy and Brundabati for treatment.
While the exact reason behind the couple taking the drastic step is yet to be known, the residents of the area claimed that they were often tortured by their son and daughter-in-law which possibly forced them to take such steps.
