Odisha reports first Omicron death

Balangir: A 45-years-old woman has succumbed to the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the Balangir district of Odisha on Thursday, informed Balangir Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Snehalata Sahu.

Reportedly, the deceased woman was admitted to Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital on December 22, 2021, after she felt unwell.

Thereafter she was shifted to Burla Hospital where she was detected with Covid-19 virus on December 23 and her sample was sent to the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar for genome sequencing.

However, before the results were out, she lost her life due to a cardiac arrest on December 27, 2021, and her body was handed over to the family.

The health team has arrived at her native village and initiated the contact tracing process, informed the CDMO. The RT-PCR tests of all the contacts of the deceased have begun as a safety measure.

It is to be noted that the current tally of Omicron cases has risen to 61 after the State reported 24 cases on Wednesday.
