Odisha: Konark Temple to be opened to public in next 2-3 days

Konark:  The Sun Temple here in Odisha’s Puri district will be opened to public in next 2-3 days, the Union Ministry of Culture said in a release on Friday. The world famous Monument was closed due to the devastating Cyclone Fani that battered the Coastal Odisha.

The Ministry, in its release said, a high level team of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officials led by DG ASI, Usha Sharma visited the Konark Temple in forenoon on 10th May 2019.

The team observed that by and large there is no structural damage to the Monument, which will be restored back to normal within about a fortnight.

The team also found that over 200 trees have been damaged which are being cleared. The electric and illumination system including internet access has gone out of order, restoration of which will take some time. The chemical cleaning and consolidation of eastern face will be completed on priority.

The team will also visit Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri to assess the damage caused by the Cyclone.

The state government had sought help from the ASI to assess the damage caused to these world heritage monuments.

Earlier, the Superintending Archaeologist, Bhubaneswar Circle ASI had inspected Monuments including Sri Jagannath Temple at Puri. He found certain damages on the Surface but no major damage to the structure of the temple.
