Odisha CM reviews flood-like situation

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday reviewed the possible flood-like situation in the state.

Patnaik reviewed the flood-like in the presence of Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi and Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Bishupada Sethi.

The CM directed the concerned officials to keep watch on the water levels of Mahanadi river basin and stay prepared to combat the situation.

In the meeting, it was reviewed that a possible flood-like situation has been triggered as 25 sluice gates of Hirakud Dam have been opened following release of flood water by Chhattisgarh into the lower catchments of Mahanadi River.  Besides, water from other tributaries entering the river.

It is expected that 8.5 lakh cusec of flood water would reach Mundali barrage by Thursday morning.

The heavy inflow of flood water would cause a low to medium flood situation in the districts of Sambalpur, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nayagarh, Angul, Cuttack, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khurda and Jajpur.

The collectors of these districts have been asked to stay alert and ensure all arrangements to handle the situation. The Collectors also have been asked to shift people living in the low-lying areas apart from keeping ready medicines, food and drinking water and other relief materials.

Sources said that three NDRF and two ODRAF teams have been deployed to carry out rescue operations. It is also learnt that 198 boats and 474 flood-ready shelters have been prepared to rescue and relocate people.
