Odisha CM appreciates SC directive on Polavaram project

Mr. Naveen Patnaik believes that SC’s intervention will lead to the project having a free flow go-ahead after all impending issues are resolved.

Bhubaneswar:  Chief Minster’s Office tweeted today that “the order to bring revised data on changed design flow into consideration will pave way for determination & restoration of legitimate rights & address genuine demands of people of Odisha and our tribal brothers and sisters of Malkangiri.”

This came as a follow-up came after the Chief Minister, Mr. Naveen Patnaik, on 21st November requested Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, to put a hold on the Polavaram dam until all issues are resolved. He also mentioned in his letter to give directions to the Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry to cancel the July order for Polavaram project.

The Ministry has kept the “stop work order” under remission from July 3, 2018, for a year citing the assurances given by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu that the reservoir of the Polavaram project will not be impounded without the permission of the Ministry.

Patnaik said the Polavaram project can be reformulated as per Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal (GWDT) award without causing large-scale submergence in Odisha, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh.
