Noted Odia Playwright Kartik Chandra Rath Passes Away

Bhubaneswar: Noted Odia playwright theatre personality Kartik Chandra Rath passed away on Monday afternoon at a private hospital after prolonged illness. He was 70.

Bestowed with the Sahitya Akademi Award, Rath is known for his contribution in realms of Odia and Hindi plays and organising the international theatre festival in Cuttack. His One Act Play ‘Nisang Bisarga’ had won the prestigious literary award.

Having started his journey at the young age of 15 with the Odia play “Aie Desa, Aie mati”, Rath has written more than 60 plays till date. He has also scripted, directed, acted and organized many plays on various socially-relevant subjects.

Over the last 40 years, Rath had participated in various national and international plays and won laurels for his style of writing and direction. He has also been credited for carving a niche for the Odia dramas and plays in the national arena.
