Male Tamarin monkey dies in Nandankanan

Bhubaneswar: In yet another loss to the Nanadankanan Zoological Park here, a rare species male monkey breathed his last under treatment today.

The deceased monkey, one of the two hipster moustached monkey which had been brought from Madurai of Tamil Nadu in 2018.  It had been lodged in the quarantine ward of the veterinary unit of the zoo for treatment, informed zoo officials.

The monkey death has left the zoo with one female Tamarin monkey only.

Notably, the monkey which died today is the same one which had escaped from the enclosure in Nandankanan in August last year and was captured later by officials.

Having the a life expectancy of upto 18 years the squirrel-sized Tamarin monkeys are found in southern central America, northwestern Colombia and the Amazon basin.
