Locals Stage Demonstration Against Rampant Sand Mining In Balasore

Balasore: Locals of Sikharpur in Jaleswar area in the district today staged a demonstration alleging violation of guidelines of sand mining from Subarnarekha river bed. The protestors staged a road blockade and even detained tractors engaged in the transportation of sand.

The locals alleged that the local trader who has got permission for sand lifting is involved in the illegal export of sand to neighbouring Bengal. “The traders are mining sand by engaging excavators instead of manual labour. They are also digging dipper on the river bed than the permissible limit. Excessive sand mining poses danger to the villages” alleged a demonstrator.

The villagers also alleged that they are being threatened by the sand mafia when they oppose the mining. “We have informed the matter several times to the district administration officials but they are yet to initiate any action. We strongly suspect an unholy nexus between the mafias and district administration officials,” alleged another villager.

Tehsildar of Jaleswar, Abhimanyu Panda said that he is aware of the demonstration. “I have asked the Revenue Inspector to conduct an inquiry and submit a report. We will also have a discussion with the villagers about their problem relating to sand mining,” said Panda.
