Commissionerate Police seizes 90 Kgs cannabis worth 9 lakhs, 2 arrested

Bhubaneswar: Two individuals involved in the drug trade have been apprehended, and a substantial 90 kilograms of cannabis, valued at Rs 9 lakhs, has been seized, along with one vehicle used for transportation.

In an ongoing effort to combat the narcotics trade within the twin cities of the Commissionerate, the Special Crime Unit has successfully dismantled an organized gang of cannabis traffickers.

A case has been registered under sections 20(b)(ii)(C)/29 of the NDPS Act and is presently under investigation. The Narcotics wing of the Special Crime Unit, led by Sanjeev Satpathy, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Mr. K.K. Hariprasad, Assistant Commissioner of Police, along with Inspector Santoshini Behera, SI Tapan Swain and the dedicated team, had been diligently monitoring the activities of an organized gang of drug traffickers who were operating inside the city, keeping their stock yard in Unit-6 , under Capital Police Station limit.

Based on reliable information, these traffickers were acquiring significant quantities of cannabis from Phulbani, storing their supply in a warehouse located in Sadak Basti, Unit6. Out of the two apprehended suspects, one hailed from the Kandhamal region, while one was from Nayagarh.

The two suspects are staying in the same slum and in a criminal conspiracy were procuring these cannabis from Kandhamal, as the principal accused Subashis Digal is from Phulbani and knows the areas of procurement of these drugs in a cheaper price, which they were retailing in much higher price.

As learnt during investigation, the accused persons were procuring these cannabis at Rs. 2500 – 3000 per Kg, which they were retailing at Rs 10,000 and more in the local market. The principal accused Subhasis Digal was using his maternal uncles Indica Car for such illicit transportation and procurement of cannabis directly from Kandhamal on demand, which has been seized during investigation.

On November 22, 2023, following a demand for cannabis, the suspects procured 90 kilograms of cannabis from Phulbani, which was initially kept in the house of the principal accused Subhasis and on 23.11.23 around 11.30 Am, the accused were transporting these cannabis to retail inside the city.

Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Unit Team conducted a raid at Unit-6, Play ground, while the culprits were proceeding with the car loaded with cannabis, the crime unit team successfully detained the vehicle.

During sustain interrogation names of the suppliers have also been ascertained and the identities of the individuals to whom the illicit items were intended for delivery. The investigative team is working diligently on this information, and soon some more arrest is expected in this case.

The team is also probing the financial aspects of this criminal enterprise and the intricate network of individuals involved in the narcotics trade. The accused individuals are to be presented before the Court tomorrow, with requests for police remand to facilitate a more comprehensive custodial interrogation. Articles Seized:
