Child Marriage Bid Foiled In Bhubaneswar, Minor Girl Rescued

Bhubaneswar: A bid to marry-off a minor girl was foiled by the district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Commissionerate Police at Bharatpur here on Friday.

According to reports, the marriage of a 17-year-old  girl was fixed with a 29-year-old man from Kandhamal district. After receiving a tip-off, BMC CDPO Sasmita Hota directed Anganwadi supervisor Jhulana Sethi to stop the illegal marriage.

Sethi, along with childline’s Harapriya Pati and Prashant Sahoo reached the marriage venue and tried to stop the wedding ceremony, but they were locked up in a room by some of the girl’s relatives.

After this, the Khandagiri Police reached the spot and rescued the officials as well as the minor girl.

The groom was detained but he was released after interrogation.

Meanwhile, the girl is in the custody of childline. She will be produced before the Child Welfare Committee on Saturday.

The Police informed that a case has been registered against the culprits and stringent action will be taken.
