Baby Elephant Drowns In Mahanadi River In Jharsuguda

Jharsuguda: A baby elephant drowned in Mahanadi river near Bhikampalli Forest Division at Kusmel village under Lakhanpur block of Odisha’s Jharsuguda district on Friday.

According to reports, an elephant herd from Barapahada forest near Debrigarh Sanctuary was crossing the river on Friday afternoon. It is being suspected that the elephant calf must have slipped into deep water and drowned in the attempt.

The dead elephant calf is believed to be one-month-old.

The incident came to light when some fishermen saw the dead calf near the river bank in the morning and immediately informed the forest officials.

On intimation, a team of forest officials reached the spot and seized the carcass, which was later sent for post-mortem.

An investigation into the incident has been initiated.
