Another farmer attempts suicide in Kendrapara over crop loss

Kendrapara: With no respite to the state from farmers’ plight, another farmer attempted suicide in Maliparida village under Rajnagar Tehsil in the district on Friday over crop loss and loan burden.

The distressed farmer has been identified as Rabindra Roy.

Rabindra who had cultivated paddy on 6 acres of his land by taking loans from various sources, reportedly suffered crop damage due to low-pressure induced rain few months ago. Worried over repaying the loan he tried to kill self this morning by consuming poison.

Rabindra was rushed to a nearby hospital by his family members following suicide bid and was later shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack as his condition deteriorated.

In the first incident of farmer suicide in coastal district of Kendrapara, one Bhabagrahi Sutar (48) of Namatara village ended his life in November this year due to crop loss caused by unseasonal rain. He hasd failed to repay the loans taken from various sources for farming.
