11 dead, 25 hurt as mini truck falls off hilly road in Kandhamal

Phulbani: In a tragic incident, at least 11 persons including women and children were killed and over 25 sustained injuries after a mini truck slipped off Poiguda ghat road under Brahmanigaon police limits in Kandhamal district today.

As per the report, around 50 persons from Gadapur area were en-route to Brahmanigaon to take part in a relative’s ‘priestly ordination’ held by the Catholic Church in the morning when the mishap took place. It is suspected that the driver of the Tata 407 vehicle they were boarding was driving under the influence of alcohol due to which lost visibility and caused the vehicle to slip off the hilly road.

As the vehicle plunged into a gorge after the mishap, at least six persons namely Lizarani Pradhan, Masiha Paltasingh, Almina Nayak, Dipak Nayak, Lazar Nayak, Pramila Chhatia died on the spot.

Some locals immediately rushed to the spot and rescued the injured trapped inside the mangled mini truck.

Later, local police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and sent the injured to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. At least five persons died on their way to hospital.

Kandhamal Collector Brundha D has visited the accident spot to take stock of the situation.

A pall of gloom has descended on the area following the mishap.
