Jajpur: A middle-aged woman was charred to death after she set herself afire in Manapur village under Kuakhia police limits in the district last night.

The deceased has been identified as Jayanti Padhiari.

The incident took place in the small hours of the night while all her family members were asleep. Jayanti took out a kerosene jar and set herself on fire after sprinkling the oil all over her body.

The incident came to fore after the minor daughter of the deceased woke up from sleep hearing her screams and raised an alarm.

Family members rushed the woman to Jajpur Road Community Health Centre (CHC) with critical burn injury where she succumbed under treatment.

“The victim was brought to the hospital at around 3.30 AM last night. She was referred to SCB Medical in Cuttack after preliminary treatment due to 100 per cent burn injury. She died before 108 ambulance could shift her to Cuttack,” said Dr Santosh Kumar Prutsty, Medical Officer, Jajpur CHC.

While the exact cause of the suicide is yet to be known, the deceased’s brother-in-law ruled out any family feud behind the incident. He said the deceased was suffering from a mental disorder after she lost her husband, both father-in-law and mother-in-law to a disease, two years ago. She had also undergone a treatment at the SCB Medical in Cuttack recently for the same, he added.
