Odisha: Hirakud water level rises as Chhattisgarh opens Kalma Barrage Gates

With the continuous flow of water into the Hirakud, authorities are speculating about having to open more floodgates at the dam.

Sambalpur: The water level in Hirakud continues to rise, with Chhattisgarh having opened all 66 gates of the Kalma Barrage. To manage the situation, authorities are releasing floodwater through the 12 gates of Hirakud.

10 gates of Hirakud were opened in two phases yesterday, making the water level rise to about five lakh cusecs. Currently, the water level at Hirakud is at 620 feet, with 4,97,016 cusecs of floodwater entering every second. 2,22,503 cusecs of water are being drained out, trying to control the situation.

With the continuous flow of water into the Hirakud, authorities are speculating about having to open more floodgates at the dam. Floods have, so far, affected about 5 lakh people. Relief operations for the affected are underway.

The districts along the coast of the Mahanadi River have been placed on high alert. The local administration is actively raising awareness among the people to ensure safety.
