Cuttack: Taking a serious note of a minor boy’s death in an open drain in Cuttack City earlier this year, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reportedly directed the Odisha government to provide Rs 2 lakh compensation to the next kin of the deceased boy.

The NHRC has written a letter in this regard to the Chief Secretary of the Government of Odisha on the complaint of a human rights activist. It said that Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia should be provided to the family of the deceased minor and the state government has to submit the proof of the payment to the victim’s family within the next six weeks.

It is to be noted here that a 9-year-old boy, Joseph Sahani of Modern Public School, died after falling into an open drain at Bidanasi area on January 15.

The human rights activist had alleged that the under-construction drains remain open for two to three months due to the negligence of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) due to which people fall into it and die.
