Bhubaneswar: Holy Ramadan starts in Odisha from today. Muslims will observe fast for the entire the month of Ramadan, said reports.  The month-long holy month of Ramadan has begun with Tarabi recitation from night.

Ramadan is a holy and religious month in Islam. It will start from March 12 and end on April 9. During this period, Muslims fast all day long during the month of Ramadan, which is called ‘roja’.

A decision has been taken by Anjuman Islamia Ahle Sunnat and Jamaat Odisha to start the month of Ramadan in Odisha. The Lucknow Chand Committee clarified the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

The fasting people observe the fast from sunrise to sunset for a month. At this time of Ramadan starts in Odisha, the Muslim brothers gather in different mosques and offer prayers.

For 30 days, all or most of all Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is observed by consuming Seri and food before sunrise. After sunset Iftar is observed, food is eaten and the fast is broken.

The entire 30 days of fasting is followed by special prayers. Everyone believes that this month is the month of repentance. Throughout the month, Muslim devotees consume special foods and beverages.

Special food like laccha (semolina), faluda and dry fruits are sold and are in high demand. Various gift items are also in demand as people believe in donating things during this holy month. The first fast and prayer of the month of Ramadan shall begin today as the moon was not sighted due to the rainy weather yesterday.

At the end of the fast, ‘Iftar’ is celebrated in the evening. This month is said to be dedicated to doing good deeds. The Muslim community fasts throughout the month of Ramadan, prays three times a day and wishes for the well-being of their families and the entire world.
