Hirakud opens five more sluice gates

Hirakud sluice gateSambalpur: In a move to keep the water level in the Hirakud dam here within manageable limits, dam authorities today opened five more sluice gates taking the total number of gates opened to eight since Sunday. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was followed while releasing surplus water through these gates and locals in the downstream villages were informed about it sufficiently in advance.

According to a reports, the decision to open more gates was taken following a further increase in the water level in the dam today as compared to yesterday. The water level at Hirakud stood at 608.37 meters this morning with 1.61 lakh cusecs of water entering the dam every second against a release of 1.14 lakh cusecs. The water level in the dam is constantly being monitored by the authorities to decide the further course of action.

Notably, on Sunday, the water level in Hirakud remained at 607.71 ft at noon.
